Topgrading AI vs. Your ATS's Built-In AI
Credit where due: ATS-native AI is genuinely useful
Modern applicant tracking systems — Greenhouse and Ashby most visibly — now ship real AI features: interview notetaking, automatic summaries, drafted scorecard feedback, structured interview kits. For the administrative layer of hiring, that's a real improvement, delivered at zero marginal cost inside a contract you already have. If someone tells you ATS AI is useless, they're selling something.
What notetaking structurally can't do
The ATS's AI sits inside one artifact at a time: it summarizes this interview, drafts feedback for this conversation. Three things fall outside that design:
- A fixed, role-specific bar. A summary describes what happened; it doesn't measure it against a Job Scorecard defined before the process started. Two interviewers reading the same summary still reach two different verdicts.
- Cross-artifact verification. The résumé claims one thing, the interview reveals another, the Career History Form says a third. Each document gets its own summary — nobody's job is to hold them against each other and flag the mismatches. That reconciliation is where mis-hires get caught.
- An evidence-cited verdict. "Strong communicator, some concerns about ownership" is a summary. "Scored 4/10 on ownership — here are the three verbatim quotes" is a defensible decision. Only one of them survives a hiring dispute or a post-mortem.

Frequently asked questions
My ATS already has AI. Why would I need anything else?
ATS AI reduces admin: notes, summaries, drafted feedback. It doesn't verify — score against a fixed scorecard, cross-check claims across artifacts, flag mismatches. If your pain is admin, your ATS may be enough. If it's mis-hires, you need a verification layer.
Does Topgrading AI replace my ATS?
No. Keep your ATS for pipeline, offers, and compliance. Topgrading AI handles the evaluate-and-decide layer — scorecards, structured questions, evidence-cited scoring.
Does it integrate with Greenhouse, Ashby, or Lever?
Not yet — integrations are on the roadmap. Today teams run it alongside: résumés and transcripts in, scored verdicts out, decision recorded in the ATS as usual.
What's the difference between an AI summary and a scored verdict?
A summary tells you what was said. A scored verdict measures it against the fixed bar for the role, competency by competency, with verbatim quotes as evidence — comparable across every candidate and interviewer.
