Topgrading AI vs. Interview-Intelligence Tools
Credit where due: recording changed interviewing
Before interview intelligence, interviews were the least observable process in the company — hours of critical conversation reduced to three bullet points from memory. Recorders fixed that: complete transcripts, searchable highlights, interviewer coaching on talk ratios and question quality, and onboarding shortcuts for new interviewers. If your interviews are chaotic, unobserved, or wildly different interviewer to interviewer, these tools genuinely help.
What a recording still isn't
A perfect transcript of an unstructured evaluation is a perfectly captured unstructured evaluation. Three gaps survive the recording:
- No fixed bar. The summary describes what was said — it doesn't measure it against role-specific success criteria defined before the interview. Two hiring managers reading the same highlights still reach two different verdicts.
- No cross-artifact memory. The recorder captures the interview. It doesn't hold the interview against the résumé and the Career History Form and flag that the "team of 12" became "mostly solo work" between documents. That reconciliation is where mis-representation gets caught.
- Coaching ≠ deciding. Interviewer coaching improves the questions asked. It doesn't produce a scored, comparable, evidence-cited verdict on the candidate — which is the artifact a hiring decision (and a hiring dispute) actually needs.

Frequently asked questions
What do interview-intelligence tools actually do?
Record, transcribe, and summarize interviews, and coach interviewers on technique — talk ratios, question quality, process consistency. For interview visibility and interviewer craft, they're excellent.
How is Topgrading AI different from a recorder?
Recorders capture what was said; Topgrading AI judges it — scored against a fixed scorecard with verbatim evidence, cross-checked against the résumé and Career History Form. The output is a comparable verdict, not a summary.
Can I use both together?
Yes, naturally: the recorder produces the transcript, Topgrading AI consumes it and produces the scored evaluation. Topgrading AI doesn't record interviews itself.
Which one if my problem is bad hires, not bad interviews?
Verification. Coaching improves questions; scorecard scoring improves decisions. If the wrong people keep getting hired out of smooth interviews, the missing layer is ours.
